Vegan Tapas in Madrid: What’s Actually Vegan (and What to Watch Out For)

If you’re traveling to Madrid and wondering whether you can enjoy tapas as a vegan, the short answer is yes – but only if you know what to order and what to avoid.

Spanish tapas culture is incredible… and also full of hidden animal ingredients that don’t always show up on menus. If you don’t speak Spanish, navigating the tapas scene is even harder.

This guide breaks down which tapas are usually vegan, which ones are risky, and how to eat confidently as a vegan in Madrid.

Are There Vegan Tapas in Madrid?

Yes. Madrid has plenty of vegan-friendly tapas, including traditional dishes that just happen to be vegan and modern vegan versions of classic tapas.

The catch? Many dishes that look vegan aren’t, and servers probably won’t flag ingredients unless you ask.

Traditional Tapas That Are Often Vegan

These are common Madrid tapas that are usually vegan, but still worth confirming:

  • Patatas bravas (potatoes with spicy tomato sauce; watch out for aioli)
  • Pan con tomate (bread with tomato, olive oil, and salt)
  • Aceitunas (marinated olives; confirm no anchovies or “anchoas”)
  • Pimientos de padrón (fried peppers with salt)
  • Gazpacho (typically vegan, but not always)

Always ask: “¿Es vegano?” and confirm there’s no mayo, fish, dairy, or meat stock.

Tapas That Are Usually NOT Vegan (Even If They Seem Like They Might Be)

These dishes trip people up:

  • Croquetas (almost always contain dairy and meat/fish)
  • Ensaladilla rusa (mayo + tuna are standard in this salad)
  • Setas a la plancha (often cooked with butter or ham fat, you could request “solo con aceite” which means “with oil only”)
  • Salsas (“salsa” is the general term for “sauce” in Spanish, so this doesn’t mean Mexican-style salsa unless you’re at a Mexican restaurant. Many Spanish sauces include fish stock or dairy)

If you see the words “caldo,” “nata,” “huevo,” or “anchoa,” it’s not vegan.

Modern Vegan Tapas in Madrid

Madrid also has a growing vegan scene with fully vegan tapas bars and restaurants offering plant-based versions of classics like croquetas, tortilla española (Spanish potato omelette), and even vegan jamón (ham)-style dishes.

The problem?
These places are scattered, some are easy to miss, and Google Maps doesn’t tell you which ones are actually worth your time.

The Biggest Mistake Vegans Make in Madrid

Trying to “wing it.”

Madrid is vegan-friendly, but it’s not self-explanatory. Without local knowledge, people:

  • End up eating bread and olives every night
  • Miss great hidden vegan spots
  • Accidentally eat animal products due to language or assumptions
